A Windows Server license key activates Microsoft's server operating system on your physical or virtual server. This category carries Standard and Datacenter license keys for Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025. The keys are Retail, perpetual and free of any subscription.
Windows Server license prices come down to two main factors: the release you choose and whether you go with Standard or Datacenter. The more you virtualize, the more Datacenter makes sense, while Standard is usually enough for a lightly virtualized server.
Windows Server 2025 is Microsoft's newest LTSC server release, and with the longest support window it is the first choice for new deployments. It comes with Credential Guard on by default on eligible hardware, plus built-in Windows LAPS and OpenSSH. Windows Server 2022 brings Secured-core server, TLS 1.3 by default and management through Azure Arc, while Windows Server 2019 stands out with Windows Admin Center and Storage Migration Service.
Windows Server 2016 was the first release with Windows container support, and its extended support ends in January 2027. Windows Server 2012 R2 no longer receives security updates, so consider it only for a legacy application or a test environment. If an application in your current setup depends on a specific release, staying on that release makes the transition easier.
Windows Server Standard is designed for physical or lightly virtualized servers and gives a fully licensed server rights to two virtual machines. Datacenter is meant for heavily virtualized environments and allows unlimited virtual machines. From 2016 onward, features such as Storage Spaces Direct, shielded virtual machines and software-defined networking are only available in Datacenter.
Licensing follows Microsoft's terms. Releases from 2016 onward are licensed per core, while 2012 R2 is licensed per processor. Each user or device that connects to the server also needs a Windows Server CAL, and Remote Desktop Services needs RDS CALs, since the products here are the server operating system key only.
A genuine Windows Server license keeps your server on regular security updates and lets it run business roles without licensing warnings. Licenses are delivered digitally. If you are looking for an affordable setup, choose the option that matches your virtualization needs and no more. Also make sure the edition on your installation media matches the option you buy.
