Quick answer: The "Activate Windows, Go to Settings to activate Windows" watermark means Windows isn't activated. The only permanent way to remove it is to activate Windows with a valid product key: Settings > System > Activation > Change product key. If you already have a license and the watermark still shows, the cause is usually an edition mismatch, a hardware change or a leftover KMS setting. Each fix is below.
Registry tweaks and "watermark remover" tools only hide the text. Windows stays unactivated, personalization stays locked, and the watermark can come back after an update.
Why the Watermark Appears
| Situation | What's happening | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Windows was never activated | No product key was entered during setup | Enter a product key (Fix 1) |
| You replaced the motherboard or CPU | Windows sees the PC as a new device | Activation troubleshooter (Fix 2) |
| The installed edition doesn't match your license | For example a Home license with Pro installed | Match the edition (Fix 3) |
| Windows was activated with a KMS tool before | The fake KMS server is gone and activation has expired | Clear the KMS leftovers (Fix 4) |
| Evaluation or Enterprise edition is installed | These editions are for businesses, home keys won't work | Clean install Home or Pro |
Check Your Activation Status First
Open Settings > System > Activation (on Windows 10 it's Settings > Update & Security > Activation). You'll see the installed edition and the activation state. Note any error code.
For more detail, open Terminal (Admin) and run:
slmgr /xpr
It tells you whether Windows is permanently activated. If you see an expiry date, Windows was activated temporarily through a KMS server.
slmgr /dli
It shows the license channel (retail, OEM or volume) and the last five characters of the key. We explain the license types in OEM vs retail vs digital license.
Fix 1: Activate Windows with a Product Key
If Windows has never been activated, entering a product key removes the watermark.
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Activation.
- Next to Change product key, select Change.
- Enter your 25-character key and select Activate.
The key has to match your installed edition (Home or Pro). Full steps and the command line method are in our guide on how to activate Windows 11.
Fix 2: Run the Activation Troubleshooter After a Hardware Change
If the watermark appeared after you replaced the motherboard or CPU, Windows can't match your license to the new hardware.
- On Settings > System > Activation, select Troubleshoot.
- Choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account and pick this PC from the list.
This only works if your license was linked to your Microsoft account before the change. OEM licenses that came with a PC usually don't move to a new motherboard, so you'll need a new license.
Fix 3: Match the Installed Edition to Your License
If you have a Home license but installed Pro (or the other way round), Windows won't activate. You have two options:
- Install the edition you're licensed for: to use your Home license, clean install Home. If Home was activated on this PC before, it reactivates on its own once it's online.
- Get a key for the edition you installed: if Pro is installed and you want its features, enter a Windows 11 Pro key. If you have an activated Home install, a Home to Pro upgrade key is enough.
Not sure which edition you need? See Windows 11 Home vs Pro.
Fix 4: Clear Leftover KMS Settings
If the PC was activated with an "activator" tool before, Windows keeps looking for a fake KMS server it can no longer reach, and the watermark returns. Clear the leftovers first, then enter your own key. Open Terminal (Admin) and run, one at a time:
slmgr /upk
slmgr /cpky
slmgr /ckms
The first command uninstalls the current key, the second removes it from the registry and the third clears the KMS server setting. Then install and activate your key:
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato
If an activator is still installed, run a full scan with Windows Security too. We explain why these tools are risky in free Windows 11 keys and KMSPico.
I Activated Windows, but the Watermark Is Still There
If the Activation page says "Windows is activated" but the watermark hasn't gone:
-
Restart your PC. The watermark usually disappears after the first restart.
-
If you'd rather not restart, restart Windows Explorer from Terminal:
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe start explorer.exe -
If it's still there, run
slmgr /xprto confirm the activation is permanent.
Why We Don't Recommend Registry Hacks or Watermark Removers
You'll find guides that hide the watermark with a registry change or a "watermark remover" app. These methods:
- Don't activate Windows. They only hide the text. Wallpaper, colors and themes stay locked.
- Aren't permanent. A Windows update can bring the watermark back.
- Carry risk. Some of these tools ship with malware, and the ones that patch system files can make Windows unstable.
What Happens If You Don't Activate Windows?
Windows keeps working and keeps getting security updates. But:
- The "Activate Windows" watermark stays in the bottom right corner.
- Wallpaper, colors, lock screen and theme settings are locked.
- You'll see activation reminders from time to time.
For long-term use you need a license. Windows 11 Home fits home, school and gaming, and Windows 11 Pro fits work and remote access.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Activate Windows watermark go away on its own?
No. It only disappears once Windows is activated, usually after the next restart.
I have a license, so why do I see the watermark?
The most common causes are an edition that doesn't match your license (Pro installed instead of Home, for example), a motherboard change, or settings left behind by a KMS activator. The error code on the Activation page tells you which one applies.
Does an unactivated Windows run slower or affect games?
No. Performance is exactly the same. Only personalization is locked and the watermark is shown.
Is it legal to hide the watermark with a registry edit?
Hiding the watermark doesn't license Windows. Under Microsoft's license terms, using Windows long term requires a valid license.
The watermark appeared after I reinstalled Windows. What should I do?
If you reinstalled the same edition on the same PC, just connect to the internet. Windows reactivates with its digital license. If it doesn't, run the troubleshooter on the Activation page.
How do I remove the watermark on Windows 10?
The steps are the same, but the Activation page is under Settings > Update & Security > Activation. Windows 10 support ended in October 2025, so if you have a licensed Windows 10 install, we recommend the free upgrade to Windows 11.
