Quick answer: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation, select Change product key, enter your 25-character key and select Activate. The key has to match your edition (Home or Pro). Microsoft no longer sells Windows 10, but a Windows 11 key for the same edition activates Windows 10 too.
Below we cover how to check your activation status, two ways to enter a key, what to do after a reinstall, what the common error codes mean, and how to keep Windows 10 secure now that support has ended.
First, Check Your Activation Status
Press Win + I, then go to Update & Security > Activation. You'll see your edition (Windows 10 Home or Pro) and one of these messages:
- Windows is activated: you're done.
- Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account: your license is tied to your hardware and your account, which helps after a reinstall or a hardware change.
- Windows is not activated: you need to enter a product key or run the troubleshooter.
Match the key to your edition: a Home key activates Home and a Pro key activates Pro. If you enter a Pro key on a Home install, Windows upgrades you to Pro.
Which Keys Activate Windows 10?
| Key you have | Activates Windows 10? |
|---|---|
| Windows 10 Home or Pro key | Yes, the same edition |
| Windows 11 Home or Pro key | Yes, the same edition of Windows 10 |
| OEM key embedded in the motherboard | Yes, automatically on that PC |
| Windows 7 or 8.1 key | Not reliably, Microsoft ended the free upgrade in 2023 |
| Enterprise (KMS) keys or keys shared online | No, not meant for home or small business PCs |
Not sure where your key is? See how to find your Windows product key.
Method 1: Activate in Settings (Recommended)
- Open Start > Settings or press Win + I.
- Select Update & Security, then Activation in the left menu.
- Select Change product key. If User Account Control asks, choose Yes.
- Type your 25-character product key. Windows adds the dashes for you.
- Select Next, then Activate.
- When you see "Windows is activated", you're done.
Tip: If you pasted the key, make sure there's no space at the start or end. Mixing up 0 (zero) and the letter O, or 8 and B, is another common mistake.
Method 2: Activate From the Command Line (slmgr)
If the Settings page won't open, Windows' built-in licensing tool slmgr does the same job. You don't need to download anything.
-
Right-click Start and open Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
-
Install your key (replace the Xs with your key):
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX -
Activate:
slmgr /ato -
A window should confirm "Product activated successfully".
| Command | What it shows |
|---|---|
slmgr /xpr | Whether Windows is permanently activated |
slmgr /dli | The license channel and the last 5 characters of the installed key |
Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro
You can move an activated Windows 10 Home install to Pro without losing your files:
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Change product key and enter a Pro key. A Windows 11 Pro key or a Home to Pro upgrade key works too.
- Windows installs the Pro features and restarts.
What Pro adds over Home is the same on Windows 10 and 11. We break it down in Windows 11 Home vs Pro.
After a Reinstall or Hardware Change
Reinstalled Windows 10 on the same PC? You usually don't need a key. Choose I don't have a product key during setup and pick the edition you had before. Windows activates with its digital license once it's online.
Replaced the motherboard?
- In Settings > Update & Security > Activation, select Troubleshoot.
- Choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account and select this PC from the list.
This only works if your license was linked to your Microsoft account before the hardware change. Microsoft ended phone activation on December 3, 2025. For a PC that can't go online, use Microsoft's online activation portal (aka.ms/aoh) from a second device that's connected.
Common Activation Error Codes
| Error code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 0xC004F050 | The key is invalid or for a different edition | Enter a key that matches your edition (Home or Pro) |
| 0xC004C003 | The key is blocked, usually because it was used on other PCs | Contact the seller you bought it from |
| 0xC004F074 | No KMS server could be reached, often an Enterprise key or leftovers from a KMS tool | Enter a retail or OEM key for your edition |
| 0x803F7001 | No valid license was found for this device | Use Change product key to enter your key |
| 0xC004F213 | No product key was found, usually after a hardware change | Run the troubleshooter or enter your key again |
For any other error, start with Activation > Troubleshoot.
Windows 10 Support Has Ended: How to Keep Getting Security Updates
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Your PC keeps working, but to get security updates you need to join the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which now runs until October 12, 2027.
- Who can join: Windows 10 version 22H2 (Home or Pro) with the latest updates and a Microsoft account with admin rights.
- How to join: the Enroll now link in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Cost: free if you sync your PC settings with Windows Backup. Otherwise, redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or make a one-time $30 purchase.
Windows has to be activated to enroll, so set up your license first.
Should You Upgrade to Windows 11?
If your PC meets the Windows 11 requirements (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a supported processor), yes. Upgrading from a licensed Windows 10 is free through Windows Update, and your digital license carries over. On PCs that don't qualify, ESU is the official way to stay protected until 2027.
A Word on Activators
The KMS activators that come up when you search for free ways to activate Windows 10 try to activate it without a license. They often carry malware, ask you to turn off your antivirus and can stop working after an update. We cover the risks in free Windows keys and KMSPico. To get rid of the "Activate Windows" watermark the right way, see this guide.
Don't Have a Key?
Microsoft stopped selling Windows 10 in January 2023. Today the easiest way to activate Windows 10 is a Windows 11 key for the same edition, and that key keeps working when you move to Windows 11:
- Home, school and gaming: Windows 11 Home
- Work, Remote Desktop, BitLocker: Windows 11 Pro
- Moving an activated Home install to Pro: Home to Pro upgrade
When you move to Windows 11, follow our guide on how to activate Windows 11.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Windows 11 key activate Windows 10?
Yes. A Windows 11 Home key activates Windows 10 Home and a Windows 11 Pro key activates Windows 10 Pro. The same license keeps working when you upgrade to Windows 11.
Can I use Windows 10 without activating it?
Windows keeps running, but personalization settings stay locked, the "Activate Windows" watermark appears and you can't enroll in ESU. Since support has ended, an unactivated Windows 10 doesn't get security updates either.
Is it worth buying a license now that Windows 10 support has ended?
With an activated Windows 10 you can enroll in ESU and get security updates until October 12, 2027. If your PC is compatible, the same license lets you upgrade to Windows 11 for free.
Do I need my product key again after reinstalling Windows 10?
Usually not, if you reinstall the same edition on the same PC. Choose "I don't have a product key" and Windows activates with its digital license once it's online.
Can I activate Windows 10 with a Windows 7 key?
Microsoft officially ended the free upgrade from Windows 7 and 8.1 in 2023. Old keys no longer work reliably, so use a Windows 10 or Windows 11 key.
How do I remove a KMS activation?
In an admin command prompt, run `slmgr /upk` to remove the installed key and `slmgr /ckms` to clear the KMS server setting. Then enter your own key, run `slmgr /ato` and delete any scheduled tasks the tool left behind.
